**Jack's FAs, 310A and 310B**

It is a long story and there needs to be new motors installed. In the meantime, I have 310A with full ESU sound operating and 310B operating as a dummy.

The motor on the left is from 310B a similar motor is in a Mantua F7. These older motors are 3 pole motors and do not work well with today's high end sound decoders. By adjusting the back EMF I was able to make 310A operate while waiting for new motors and drive chain.

*****************************************************************

I have decided to use the motor off my NCE decoder test system to get Jack's FA operating with a 5-pole motor. The first step was to remove the ESU system and all of its parts. I removed the wires from the motor and the trucks rather than the decoder to avoid any issues with the decoder. All the plastic used in the installation of the speakers and keep alive are saved as they will fit back into the locomotive after I install the new motor.

I next had to remove the motor and drive train. The motor is press fit into the casting. So with care I was able to pry the motor out and remove the drive train connections. The new motor has a slightly larger diameter shaft which will allow me to use the current parts as they will fit onto the new shaft. Because of the slight size different in the motors, I will have to mill out space in the frame. To do this i will be removing the trucks to avoid getting any shavings from the casting into the gears.

Here are the parts as removed with the old 3-pole and the (new) Sagami motor ready for the next step, removal of the trucks.

More as I progress. Paul
